We have a stimulating weekly Half Day Release Education Programme covering a diverse range of topics that complement your work-based education. Our Programme Directors, PCME and GP Trainers ensure that you will get the full potential out of your education opportunities.
GPST1&2s are taught together. The SEP is held on Thursday afternoons during term time, with breaks during school holidays. These sessions are currently delivered by Nick Walton & Parm Mamman.
We currently have 100 doctors in GPST1&2 across 4 hospital sites in Pennine and in GP Practices. The SEP takes place in the Postgraduate Education Centres across 2 hospitals(North Manchester and Oldham)
Since the Pennine footprint covers a large geographical area and the Programme includes a large number of trainees we have tried to form smaller groups in each locality, whilst maintaining flexibility.
The sessions are a mixture of lecture style and small group work and usually offered twice to allow different Trainees a realistic chance of attendance accounting for on-call rotas and annual leave arrangements. Thus each session will normally be offered in either N Manchester and also in Oldham.
It is expected that you will normally attend the session nearest to your site of work. You should, therefore, attend the course approximately fortnightly and are not expected to attend the same session twice! Where there are several GPSTs in a department it is advisable for you to plan with your rota-master who should attend which session
Each session is planned in advance and often we have a guest speaker/facilitator.We send out teaching plans in advance which are mapped against the GP Curriculum Statements and often will include some preparatory work for our Trainees.
We ask our speakers to allow plenty of interaction during the session with space for your questions and answers. You will often be asked to look at cases or address a task in pairs or small groups as well. Handouts may be provided, but presentations are available following a session on the website and can be downloaded to attach to your ePortfolio. Over your GPST1 and 2 years we shall ‘dip into’ most chapters of the curriculum and will provide suggestions for further study and application. You will, however, need to review your own learning needs and ensure that you have used a variety of resources to equip yourself for MRCGP.
At the end of each session we do request formal written feedback for our speaker to help ensure we are delivering high quality education and we provide the Trainee with a Reflective Form to help document any learning or identified needs in the Trainee ePortfolio.
To compliment the Programme we incoporate our inovative Focus Groups and Theme Days for all our Trainees.
Dr Nick Walton and Dr Parm Mamman are the lead PCME for ST1&2.
ATTENDANCE AT THE SEP IS MANDATORY!
Please see resources tab for the attendance policy.
You are expected to have a minimum attendance of 75%, which will be regularly monitored by the Education Team and PD’s. If you are unable to attend a session, for whatever reason, please inform the course administrator (Dawn Collins) who keeps a record of attendance to be reviewed by your employer and the Deanery. Late attendance and early leaving will also be documented. A poor attendance record is a cause for concern which will prompt investigation by your PD and may be brought up at ARCP panel.
